From a small inn to a 4-star hotel in Tyrol: the 3rd generation of the Barbist family from other families is already putting their heart and soul into the Hotel Tyrol. It has continued to grow over the decades. Today it fulfills as  splendid 4 star hotel in Tyrol demands of vacation guests who WellnessEnjoyment and Mountain experience want to combine.

From inn to 4-star hotel: a look at the family chronicle

  • Mid 19th century: an ancestor of the Barbist family arrives in Tyrol from France.
  • Martin Barbist Sr.’s grandfather marries into the small farm “Merser” in Haldensee.
  • Son Johann Barbist, born in 1885, marries Maria Schädle from Haldensee in 1921.
    They have 4 children.
  • After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, military service and captivity as a prisoner of war, the first-born Martin returned to Haldensee in 1946.
  • In 1948, the Barbist family bought the farm opposite their parents’ house.
    Martin and his brother Arthur convert it into a small guesthouse.
    In 1956, the Tyrolean Martha Angerer takes over the guesthouse for the summer season on a trial basis.
    Martha and Martin get married.
  • 1956: Son Franz is born.
    At the age of 19, he takes over the management of the Hotel Lumberger Hof in Grän.
  • 1957: Opening of the Gasthof Tyrol with 12 beds and 25 seats in the parlor.
    The inn is one of the first establishments in the region with hot and cold running water and a shared bathroom.
  • 1960: Extension of the small dining room with 50 additional seats.
  • 1964: Martha & Martin’s third child, son Walter, is born.
  • 1965: Large extension with 20 rooms.
  • 1980: The neighboring building, the “Milchbar”, is purchased – a milestone for further development.
  • 1982: Hotel extension on the north side – from now on 100 beds are available.
  • 1983: Walter Barbist joins the company after completing commercial school and training in service and cooking.
    He runs the hotel together with his mother Martha until 1993.
  • 1984: New construction of hotel kitchen and dining room.
  • 1986: Walter marries Olga Burkert.
    Olga grew up in Zöblen on the Obere Halde.
    She works in her parents’ inn Zugspitzblick until her marriage.
  • 1987: Walter and Olga’s first child, daughter Martina, is born.
  • 1991: Extension of the indoor swimming pool and the Sauana facility.
  • 1993: The main building is replaced by a new building.
    20 additional rooms are built.
  • 1996: Extension of the sauna facilities and opening of the massage department.
  • 2002: Generous expansion with an extension on the north-east side of the hotel.
    The cosmetics and massage department, the second passenger elevator, the Einstein dining room and 10 additional rooms and suites are created.
  • 2005: The purchase of the land towards the forest opens up new perspectives.
  • 2006: A 2-story parking garage is built.
  • 2006: New spacious pool area with panoramic indoor pool Haldensee, outdoor pool Traualpsee and swimming pool Vilsalpsee and passage Salzstraße Tyrol.
  • 2007: Daughter Martina joins the company after graduating from the Villa Blanka hotel management school in Innsbruck.
    From this point onwards, she completed a number of extra-occupational training courses.
  • 2008: Construction of the west wing with 14 rooms and 8 family rooms as well as a dining room with 65 seats.
  • 2009: Expansion of the VitalQuelle wellness area with sauna, herbal steam bath, Kneipp course, relaxation area and fitness room.
  • 2010: Construction of the atrium with reception and reception area, hotel lobby, bar, lounge with fireplace, two lounges with a total of 60 seats.
  • 2011-2013: Expansion and renovation of the VitalQuelle wellness area (Salzstadl, bio sauna, Zirbenwald relaxation room, two additional treatment rooms).
  • 2014: Renovation of 17 double rooms in the Arnika category (30 m²).
  • 2015: Renovation of 11 double rooms in the Margerite category (22 m²).
  • 2016: Expansion of the VitalQuelle wellness area with the family & textile sauna and the extended outdoor area with the panoramic garden sauna.
  • 2020: Renovation of 17 double rooms, studios and suites in the Fire Lily, Silver Thistle and Gentian categories
  • 2021: Renovation of the two Alpenrose oriel rooms and buffet extension
  • 2020: Daughter Martina Barbist takes over the Hotel Tyrol at Haldensee from Olga & Walter Barbist in the 3rd generation.
